What is the Orton-Gillingham Method?
The Orton-Gillingham method is a philosophy and instructional approach for teaching the system and structure of written English developed in the 1930’s by Dr. Samuel T. Orton, a neurologist, and Anna Gillingham, a psychologist and educator, especially for students who have difficulty reading and spelling.
The Orton-Gillingham approach has proven successful with students who have struggled with learning to read and spell through traditional teaching methods despite normal intelligence, hearing and vision. It is the program most recommended by experts in the field of dyslexia.
Many people are not aware that the English language is actually quite regular and over 85% predictable. The Orton-Gillingham method is explicit, direct and systematic. Students are taught phonemic awareness, phonology, the structure of the English language, sound-symbol correspondences, pronunciation patterns, spelling rules, the six syllable types and syllabication. When ready, students are taught rules and patterns for words of Latin and Greek origin, including prefixes, suffixes and roots.
The Orton-Gillingham method is a multi-sensory approach to teaching these predictable reading and spelling patterns. Multi-sensory education incorporates the three learning pathways: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. This approach is beneficial not only for students with dyslexia, but for all learners.

Each lesson is written in advance for that student. This allows for instruction, guided review, practice and reinforcement at the level and pace that each student needs. Students like the structure and predictability of the lessons, which allows them to experience success.
About Tutoring Services
Patricia offers effective, individualized reading, spelling and writing tutoring utilizing the highly regarded Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory teaching method.
With her caring and supportive teaching style, Patricia delivers direct instruction on all aspects of written language, at a level and pace that is individualized according to the needs of the student. The multi-sensory style of the instruction allows the student to use three learning pathways — visual, auditory and kinesthetic, to learn and practice.
Some of the concepts taught include phonemic awareness, sound-symbol correspondence, decoding, spelling patterns and generalizations, syllable types, syllabication, prefixes and suffixes. Reading fluency and reading comprehension improve and continue to develop as the student gains competency. Additional concepts such as handwriting, sentence structure, punctuation and others are covered as the needs of each student dictate.
Each lesson is prepared in advance and specifically tailored to the needs of the student. With direct explanations, gentle encouragement and continual reinforcement the student practices each concept to achieve competence and mastery
A key aspect of Orton-Gillingham instruction is that it is diagnostic and prescriptive. This means that during each lesson the tutor observes and gathers information in three areas: concepts in which the student is proficient, concepts that the student is practicing but is not yet proficient, and concepts in which the student is weak, noting specifically the types of errors the student continues to make. This careful monitoring and observation is used by Patricia to tailor subsequent lessons, giving the student the amount of instruction, reinforcement and practice needed.

“The transformation since Pat began tutoring our daughter has been amazing. Our daughter has grown in confidence so now she is comfortable reading aloud in front of a group without practicing at home beforehand. Pat’s decoding and reading comprehension lessons have also allowed our daughter to confidently tackle classes which use books at an advanced reading level.”
